Hi all,
Some of you might have seen some of my other X1/9's over the years, I have been an avid supporter of the little Fiat roller-skate for many years. I love the simplicity and performance of these cars and also the fact that it fits into my single garage with the multitude of tools and junk alongside it without too much fuss. I have been involved in the club for many years acting as support, organiser, editor and just front line participator.

So this X1/9 is probably my swan song of X1/9's. I have been planning this car for at least 10 years. I knew the colour and detail of the car in my mind for years.

It started with a MOT failure 1980 Silver 1500 with blown engine.

I have since

  • Stripped the car down to it's shell fixed all the body work, replaced both doors.
  • Replaced and modified the wiring harness.
  • The car sit's on Cromodora Magnesium period CD31's with Arbarth centre caps, with continental 175 tyres.
  • KYB gas shocks with Jamex progressive springs.
  • Uno turbo front calipers and discs. Grooved and vented front discs, grooved back discs.
  • 1300 bumpers, grill and engine cover.
  • Custom Interior with 1300 recovered seats and as much brown and orange trim I could find (beyond good taste but I love it).
  • Over the top stereo (as you do).
  • Aprilla green bodywork.
  • Oh yeah and a 1600 turbo charged fuel injected lump borrowed from a Lancia Delta Turbo HF.
It looks just how I planned it, drives amazing. Is fast in a safe quiet way and the characteristics are just right.

So what's next! (Fiat 124?)

This is my X1/9. I found her in a barn after going to the NEC show. She has stood for 15 years and beside the dust and cobwebs I could see the potential so snapped her up for £250, very chuffed about this because it was very obvious it was worth way more.

She is an 82 model only had two owners, three now including me. She is in very good condition the main bit of rust is the boot floor and a few spots here and there but nothing major. After a bit of tampering we even got her running again and she sounded sweet....ish.

She has gone in to my garage now and will be fully restored/modified. This is my first car and I am super chuffed to say I have a convertible 1.5 mid engined rear wheel drive Italian sports car as my first car. The more I have worked on her the better I feel about it because as I pull back the years of dirt and horrible brown carpets it just keeps coming up solid. At present she is stripped down and soon I should be removing the engine ready to get to work on the little body work that needs doing.

I bought my first 1300 X1/9 in 1986 and joined the OC club at the time.

My initial 1300 was a Lime Green Special Series loved the car but it did deteriorate badly - I did loads of work on the car and kept it until 1993 before exchanging it for a XR2. I have always loved the lines of the X1/9 and again returned to ownership in 2005 buying a really clean 1980 Red 1500 this I drove for about 18 months then bought a rather sad looking Lido YAP68T- I always wanted a Nice Lido so I project managed its top drawer restoration.  This car won the Best Car awards at the Clubs nationals in 2008 and then again in 2009.

Car of the Month July 2012

Just thought I'd submit a few photos of my X1/9 that I took last year in
the Elan Valley (highly recommended for a road trip), in the hope of
getting car of the month.
