Car of the Month October 2009

This is my first X1/9; it’s a 1978 1300 Special Series (No. 3004) which I bought September 2008. Soon afterwards I had the brake pads and its camshaft and alternator belts replaced just to be on the safe side. I have also put on a new pair of door mirrors.

It’s tremendous fun to drive, especially with the roof off. It must have been quite superb when it was new. I nearly bought a metallic green X1/9 in 1983 but back then my first choice for a plaything car was an ex-army Lightweight Land Rover.

My daughter, Amy took the photographs and whilst I think it looks quite presentable, I should point out that its underside has some corrosion and its bodywork and interior are quite scruffy in places but I don’t mind. I’m just very pleased to own one of these cars twenty six years after I first considered buying one.

It has a couple of electrical faults and it needs a new choke cable and a windscreen. However, as my mechanical skills aren't that good I’ll look at these later, I don’t want it off the road before its next MOT test. My aim between now and then is to just keep on driving it along the back lanes around north Leeds and for trips into the Yorkshire Dales.
