I'm thinking of having a change of my exhaust because one of my 4 tailpipes has fallen off :-0

I'm wondering if I should go back to a stock exhaust or maybe upgrade ?

I feel that my budget is a bit limited as there's other little jobs udder like to get done and mine isn't going to be a race car so performance isn't at the top of the list.

So can anyone advise me on what's out there, what's good and most importantly what's not !

Thanks

Jason

Years ago, my first X1/9 had the ANSA exhaust on it when I bought the car. I did like it, however, the problem was I ended having to repair it regularly because it was rotting away (tail pipes falling off etc).
I went back to a stock exhaust. I thought going back to it would not give as good a performance. In the end It didn't make any difference to performance.

The stock exhaust is actually very well designed and as near to the ideal set up as you could get for a mass produced exhaust. Also a good consideration is if you are planning on using the car for longer journeys and travelling on the motorway, the stock exhaust goes quieter the higher the speed. So that you get plenty of noise at lower speeds (i.e. impressing your mates around town ;) ) and no booming noise at higher speeds unlike some of the other exhausts that you could fit.

So in summary, in my opinion, if you're not after extreme performance, the standard exhaust is plenty good enough.

I am also looking to replace my exhaust which is already a std type.

The last time I looked into this there were several companies offering a stainless steel version.

There does not appear to be anyone now.

Has anyone had a stainless steel exhaust made (for a 1500) irecently ?

Price ? contact ?
Thanks

Thanks Andy

And Danny, yes I had a quick look on ebay and it seemed that DB Rally are the only company on ebay selling a standard exhaust but I noticed that it said that it didn't have the bracket that fitted to the gearbox.

Not having fitted a std exhaust before I don't know if this is important, i assume it stops some movement and i think I'd rather have this feature than not so I'm going to keep looking.

There is another x19 company something west, "waywest" or "maywest" I'll have a look and let you know if I find anything interesting.

S Steel would be nice but price is an issue for me.

The exhaust that DG Rally are offering for he 1500 is correct. Where he mentions the bracket for the gear box that would be for very early 1500 and 1300 versions of the car.

If you look at the silencer box there is a U shaped bracket on the left hand top side. This locates onto the bracket arm from the gear box on later 1500 cars if that's what yours is.
I'll upload a picture later on showing how the exhaust fits in this area.

Mine is a while reg - Feb 82 I think.
So am I right in saying an early 1500.

I had a look, i think euro sport are selling the early exhausts with bracket £162

Danny, whilst looking I found a company that makes bespoke s Steel exhaust. Top gear is the name.

Contact only throw a former to fill out for quote , sounded expensive. Poa and all that.

Early 1500 would be 1978/79.
Yours should be the standard 1500 set up.

A stainless exhaust would have to be custom built.

Hi Jason,
Yes the POA quote does sound expensive. I might just fill the form in though.
Midwest Bayless are based in the USA. The Eurosport price for the std version is about the best I have seen.

A couple of pictures of the standard exhaust mounting bracket off the gearbox. This is on my Gran Finale.

The bracket should already be present on your car. If memory serves me correct, the ANSA exhaust utilises this bracket.

The second picture shows how it mounts on the exhaust.

Thanks for the Pics Andy.
Are those springs on the bolts holding the exhaust ?
What's the reason ?

is it because yours is a race or was that standard bolts with springs ?

Danny, let us know how much the S Steel exhaust quote is.

Thanks

Hi Jason,
My car is completely standard set up.

The springs on the bolts are standard fit and are anti-vibration I think.

Hi Jason,
Went onto the Top Gear site. It put me through to a chain called "powerline". I spoke to my local branch but they were unable to give me a price until I could take my std exhaust in as a template. I will probably do this in the spring.

Looking at other forums today a fabricator was asked a couple of years ago . £450 was quoted then although there were discounts for volume purchasing.
