new cool air intake

I spent half an hour making and installing a new carburettor air intake. The stock ones take warm less dense air in and so I thought it would run more efficiently with cooler more dense air from down near the road.I used big bore corrugated plastic pipe from E-Bay. I fastened it on with a self tapper after cutting two or three inches off the air intake. It is pretty clear in the photo. It works well and was simple.

This is my attempt at getting cold air to the carbs. Flexible alluminium tubing from local car accessory shop & Y piece from local hardware shop.

Not pretty, but it helps get cold air to the carbs.

Would like the Pipercross air box eventually.

Hi Nick,
That will work well when the carb fan is on.
Do you have a switch so that you can switch the fan on when you want?
If not it will only work when the fan is on when the car is stopped.

Another solution is to direct the ducting from the side air intake. That way you are directing the cold air straight in.
This is easier to do with the original style air filter unit as you can just attach the ducting to the intake.

The K&N style filters can drag in warm air from the engine but do open the engine bay up to allow better air movement.

Cheers
Andy

As Andy says, opening up the engine cover helps enormously. Then you can remove all that ducting and motor Fiat supplied.
Remove the mesh from the side intakes with a Dremel.
Lots of cool air now.
Plus a German Hardi electric fuel pump.
No more filling up then too hot to start.

One concern with opening up the engine cover (i.e. replacing the lower tray with mesh can be that rain can get in the engine bay which is not ideal.
Given that living in the UK means that you will get caught in rain at some point it is something to consider.

Davids mods are all good things to be done to improve air flow.

However, if cooling is a problem, then a full service of the coolimg system needs to be done first.
re-coring the rad is a must and flushing out the system thoroughly.

Once this is done then you can focus on improvements to air flow.

it is important to remember the cars were designed to be used in Italy where the ambient temperatures are higher that the UK. So if it works in Italy it should work in the UK.

Cheers
Andy

Did you notice any change in the drivability after these mods?
