TOPIC: leaded or unleaded fuel?

leaded or unleaded fuel? 1 year 10 months ago #39866

hello Everyone,

i just bought my X 1/9 gran finale (will post some pics soon) and reading through the forum i stumbled on someone saying their 1988 car runs on leaded.

Ive filled up twice now with unleaded.

which should it be?

Am i damaging it with unleaded?

95 or 97 ron?

It will be fine on unleaded, although you may have to retard the ignition timing slightly for 95 RON fuel.

Th belt and braces thing is to add a lead substitute and octane enhancer with each fill up.

Thank you

How can I tell if the ignition timing has already been retarded? It drives well on 95.
I might try on 97 on next fill up to see what happens although the mix will make it about 96.

I have a classic mini too and use additives on that. Is there any advantage with additives?

The mini has a cast iron head, so the additives are primarily to protect the exhaust valve seats from erosion and valve seat recession,

The X1/9 has an alloy head with steel valve seat inserts which can cope with unleaded fuel, so not essential but the octane booster in certain products may make it run a bit better.
If yours is running well on 95 I'd leave it as it is.

Agree with Pete.

I've been running my GF on unleaded since I bought it in 2002 with no problems.
I've not bothered with additives with mine either. (I generally forget to add them when filling up anyway!)
If it does start running a bit lumpy get it tuned up and it should be fine.
