Electric windows was created by Eddie
Hello.

I'm having a bit of a problem with an electric window… The passenger side window didn't work on my 1983 VS although the motor could be heard clicking. when I took the door card off to investigate I discovered the cables on the old style set-up had been tangled with some cables loose. I removed the motor and was able to get it working well again. Trying to re-spool the cable is a bit of a nightmare as when I get one part wound the other side comes undone. I live in Epsom Surrey, If there are any members nearby with experience in refitting the cable setup I will be happy to pay for your time and travel to assist me with this. Also, how easy/difficult is it to convert the window to the later post type? I thought I seen an article somewhere but can't find it now. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

Regards, Eddie

Hi Eddie,
I'm in Woking, so not far, I have electric cable windows on my '84 which is being restored, and the later type on the '85 which is here in Woking.
The glass window panels have different mountings for the two types which are difficult to swap, the doors can accept either system with minors mods.
If I recall, the trick to the cable windows is to use tape to hold the cables in the grooves on the drum while you get it into the door then t aka off the tape once you have some tension.

Thanks Andrew. That's really helpful. It's a fiddly job that caused me a lot of frustration. I'll have another go this evening. I've actually bought a set of the post type regulators on Ebay... good to know they're not compatible. I'll put these back on Ebay and offer them in the club site. Thanks again. Eddie
