I know this might sound like a daft question but is there a trick to removing the steering wheel? I've removed the horn and nut but it won't budge, I've given it a few hits from behind with a rubber mallet and nothing...

The steering wheel locates on the column by a spline. It may be rusted in position. It might be worth soaking some WD40 or similar around it. Then using a bit of brute force to wiggle it and pull it at the same time might just do the trick.
If still no joy you might be best getting the entire steering column out and on the workbench to see whats going on with it.
Funny how something that seems straight forward can end up taking hours to sort out!!!
Good luck!
Cheers

Andy you just beat me too it
its always the straight forward things that catch you a while. When I swapped the wheels over the older one came out easier than the newer one, bit of WD40 then standing outside the car with the roof off, bit of alternnate pulling at 9 and 3 and it freed itself off. nearly fell on my rear when it finally came off mind you!

Leave the centre nut on a couple of turns before you pull it / tap it with a mallet will stop that happening!

I had a very troublesome one once that wouldn't budge. I heated up the centre of the wheel carefully with a paint stripping gun, not too hot obviously... and the wheel almost fell off.
